Deception Pass State Park Day Trip

If you are looking for a place to take a summer day trip I’ve got the perfect place for you to go, Deception Pass State Park.

Deception Pass State Park is Washington’s most visited park for a reason. Its beauty and ease of access are unmatched. First off, this park is spread out across two islands, Fidalgo to the north and Whidbey to the south. Picture this: over 3,854 acres, a marine and camping park with 77,000 feet of saltwater shoreline and 33,900 feet of freshwater combined from three lakes. It’s like a playground for outdoor enthusiasts like you and me!

From Highway 20, you enter the park before you may even realize it.

The road twists and winds through Fidalgo Island, taking you right past Pass Lake. Keep your eyes peeled because you might spot some hopeful fishermen float tubing as you cruise by. Oh, and don’t forget to check out Rosario Beach and Bowman Bay while you’re on this side of the park. They’re total gems, trust me! I feel like this portion of the park is often less visited because people breeze past it to get to the bridges but there are some fun things on the Fidalgo end of the park to see.

A few of the attractions include: The Maiden of Deception Pass, Rosario Beach, Rosario Trailhead, Bowman Bay and Lottie Bay.

The Maiden of Deception Pass is a 24-foot-tall by 5-foot wide sculpture that was created to pay homage to a Samish legend. She’s a sight to take in, so don’t miss out an saying hi to her. This side is also home to sweeping views that look out over the Sound and toward Whidbey Island. There are plenty of places to have a picnic. The rocky shoreline is dotted with driftwood logs and there are usually tidal pools to explore.

Although the trails are all rated easy to moderate be aware that there are sheer drop-offs around the sea cliffs. The pathways can be slick even on dry days. But as long as you maneuver them with a sure-foot you’ll be fine and you can hike while taking in a birds eye view of seaweed swaying with the ocean current. If you hike to Lighthouse point, or further to Lottie Point trail, you will be able to get a view of Deception Pass Bridge.

Now, let’s talk about the bridges, because they draw a crowd in their own right.

Connecting the Fidalgo Island portion of Deception Pass State Park to the Whidbey Island portion is a set of bridges. Canoe Pass lands on Pass Island and connects to Deception Pass Bridge, all of which is collectively known as Deception Pass Bridge. A little fun fact is that as you cross over the midway point of Deception Pass Bridge you cross between Skagit County and Island County.

Deception Pass Bridge is as much a part of the landscape of Fidalgo and Whidbey Island as is the land that it connects. The bridge, which is painted an appropriate shade of “Evergreen Green,” is a marvel to see. It somehow manages to blend into its environment and stand out at the same time.

There are several great ways to see the bridge, but my favorite is from the top of it. There are two sidewalks, on either side of the bridge, that run the length of it and can be accessed from a nearby parking lot or a hiking trail. Sometimes you get lucky and get treated to a bird’s-eye view of sea life swimming in the area, like seals. If you’re extremely lucky you may see a pod of Orcas, or Lady Washington passing through the waterway.

But hold on, we’re not done yet. Brace yourself for some coastal magic!

The rocky shoreline of North Beach and West Beach runs alongside the north and west perimeter of the park; during low tide you can walk from one beach to the other and onward to the bridge. There are mountainous rocks to climb and explore tidepools upon. On zero-tide days sandbars appear and offer a whole new fun way to explore sea life.

If you’re up for an inland adventure, head to the North Beach Trail. This trail will take you all the way to Deception Pass Bridge, and along the way, you’ll discover campgrounds, firepits, designated BBQ spots, and more trails to explore. You can end your adventure at the bridge, or continue on to Goose Rock.

Goose Rock is a popular hike on Whidbey Island.

The Balds of Goose Rock-bald refers to the areas scraped to the bedrock by receding glaciers.

On this trail you’ll gain approximately 484 feet in elevation around Rocky Bald terrain. This hike is rated moderate, but I remember running my way up and back down this path as kid. With a little determination, you’ll conquer it like a true champion and be treated to a view of Cornet Bay and Ben Ure Island. I personally like to park at Scenic Vista Parking Lot when I do this hike. But if it is full you can connect to the trail from several other spots going all the way out to Cranberry Lake.

Oh, and now that I’ve mentioned it, let’s talk about Cranberry Lake.

Cranberry Lake fills nearly the entire west inland quadrant of the park. Back in the day, pioneers used it as a cranberry bog. But now, it’s a place for swimmers, boaters, and anyone who wants to reel in some freshwater fish. And guess what? Just beyond the lake, you’ll find sand dunes and a walking trail lined with ancient gnarled and windswept trees that have seen there fair share of visitors. Once upon a time this area was all sand dunes but these days they’re overgrown with vegetation.

I grew up at Deception Pass State Park.

Camping, fishing, hiking, swimming, exploring tide pools, popping Rockweed, playing teeter-totter on driftwood, cracking kelp whips, sparking white rocks, collecting sea glass and watching some STUNNING sunrises and sunsets. There is no place on earth that feels more like home to me these days. It is a hot spot for locals, they’ll be the ones who don’t look up as NAS Whidbey planes go screaming by, as well as for visitors. It is BEAUTIFUL and a great destination to take a day trip. Though, I would say be prepared to want to extend your stay. Luckily, there’s a lot of great camping spots to claim to remedy that!

What to know before you go to Deception Pass:

A Discover Pass is required at Deception Pass State Park. I recommend you head over to WA Parks to read up on rules and regulations: DECEPTION PASS STATE PARK

Community Service Day

Community Service Day 2023

Once a year, amidst the hustle and bustle of real estate transactions and property listings, the dedicated agents, and staff here at Windermere Mill Creek make a detour from our regular routine and head out to serve a cause on Community Service Day. This year our spirited office got hands-on and partnered with the Mill Creek Y to help revitalize their Community Garden.

Managing Broker Diana Hill captured this photo before the work began!

Now, you might be wondering, what the Mill Creek Y Community Garden?

I must confess. I had not heard of the garden before our Community Service Day event. Luckily, I had a great point of contact to provide clarity on the whole thing. According to Dana Hendricks, former Director of Enrichment Programs – Development and Inclusion of the YMCA of Snohomish County, current Y Board Member, AND a Realtor in our office:

“The garden was created to bring the community together, to learn how to garden and to share fresh produce with the food bank. Over the years I was able to create programming for summer camps and seasonal family classes. We grew the garden from 8 beds and a handful of volunteers to over 20 beds; later adding a green house and composting area. We had it separated into two areas. One side was known as the children’s/family garden and the other side was more community based.”

The “Before”

How Did It Start?

Dana went on to say that the idea was planted into her mind through a conversation with a community member about a neighborhood pea patch. Recognizing the untapped potential of the Y’s unused outdoor space, Y members got to work and repurposed the area into two gardens. The gardens have had several transformations since their inception. In the past, the children’s garden provided an enrichment area that housed bunnies! I can only imagine the joy that created for the kids at the Y.

Brett Bunn happily manning the wheelbarrow!

Who does it benefit?

In Hendrick’s own words: “Prior to covid it was a hub of action that served children and adults. We taught community members how to build tower gardens for those that had small spaces. We had garden volunteer dinners inside the garden, and many friendships were made and have continued for nearly a decade. Now, we have a new set of volunteers that are growing fresh produce for the food bank as well as growing some for themselves. It’s wonderful to be part of something that helps so many people.”

Preston Kallshian, Brian O’Donnell, and George Montemor building up the sidewalls of the raised garden beds.

How can somebody volunteer or donate to the cause?

“Right now, the work has been done for this year. The best time to volunteer would be at the end of the season or early in April when the work begins again.”

The “After”

What happened on the day of Community Service Day!

Now, let’s talk about the grand event that was Community Service Day. Mother Nature decided to rain on our parade. Quite literally, but that didn’t dampen our spirits one bit. We had a group of enthusiastic staff and agents come together, armed with smiles and determination, to tackle this project head-on. We battled weeds, laid down underlayment, hauled and spread bark, and gave some much-needed TLC to a few broken-down raised garden beds. Afterwards, the garden looked sparkling new! It’s moments like these that remind us of the importance of lending a helping hand. We’re proud to continue this tradition of giving back to the communities where our Windermere team lives, works, and plays!

Although community service day has come to an end, we will continue to give.

But wait, there’s more! Our office isn’t done yet. We’re committed to supporting our community throughout the year with similar initiatives. Next up on our agenda is the Second Annual Cruise-In Car Show Charity Event! The proceeds from this exciting extravaganza will go to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Snohomish County, Boys and Girls Club, the Mill Creek Food Bank, and the Windermere Foundation. So, stay tuned, because there’s always something amazing on the horizon! That’s a wrap on the tale of Community Service Day 2023. In the words of my mother, many hands make light work, and together, we can make a real difference in our community. Until next time, keep spreading those good vibes!

Thank you to everyone who came (not all pictured here)

On behalf of the office, THANK YOU to the agents and staff who showed up and made the work fun, fast, and impactful!

Summer Books

The Celebrant, by Rowley, Steven

“It’s been a minute–or five years–since Jordan Vargas last saw his college friends, and twenty-eight years since their graduation when their adult lives officially began. Now Jordan, Jordy, Naomi, Craig, and Marielle find themselves at the brink of a new decade, with all the responsibilities of adulthood, yet no closer to having their lives figured out. Though not for a lack of trying. Over the years they’ve reunited in Big Sur to honor a decades-old pact to throw each other living “funerals,” celebrations to remind themselves that life is worth living–that their lives mean something, to one another, if not to themselves. But this reunion is different. They’re not gathered as they were to bolster Marielle as her marriage crumbled, to lift Naomi after her parents died, or to intervene when Craig pleaded guilty to art fraud. This time, Jordan is sitting on a secret that will upend their pact. A deeply honest tribute to the growing pains of selfhood and the people who keep us going, coupled with Steven Rowley’s signature humor and heart, The Celebrants is a moving tale about the false invincibility of youth and the beautiful ways in which friendship helps us celebrate our lives, even amid the deepest challenges of living.”

The Quiet Tenant, by Clemence, Michallon

ONE OF THE MOST ANTICIPATED NOVELS OF 2023 * “A bravura feat of storytelling…daring and completely satisfying.” –James Patterson, #1 best-selling author

A PULSE-POUNDING PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER ABOUT A SERIAL KILLER NARRATED BY THOSE CLOSEST TO HIM: HIS 13-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER, HIS GIRLFRIEND–AND THE ONE VICTIM HE HAS SPARED

“All…of the expected suspense and psychological tension, but offering a story about women–the ones who didn’t know the evil that lurked within, the ones who tried to placate or fight but still perished, the ones who might actually survive. Haunting but never prurient…truly unforgettable.” — Alafair Burke, author of The Wife

Aidan Thomas is a hard-working family man and a somewhat beloved figure in the small upstate New York town where he lives. He’s the kind of man who always lends a hand and has a good word for everyone. But Aidan has a dark secret he’s been keeping from everyone in town and those closest to him. He’s a kidnapper and serial killer. Aidan has murdered eight women and there’s a ninth he has earmarked for death: Rachel, imprisoned in a backyard shed, fearing for her life.

When Aidan’s wife dies, he and his thirteen-year-old daughter Cecilia are forced to move. Aidan has no choice but to bring Rachel along, introducing her to Cecilia as a “family friend” who needs a place to stay. Aidan is betting on Rachel, after five years of captivity, being too brainwashed and fearful to attempt to escape. But Rachel is a fighter and survivor, and recognizes Cecilia might just be the lifeline she has waited for all these years. As Rachel tests the boundaries of her new living situation, she begins to form a tenuous connection with Cecilia. And when Emily, a local restaurant owner, develops a crush on the handsome widower, she finds herself drawn into Rachel and Cecilia’s orbit, coming dangerously close to discovering Aidan’s secret.

Told through the perspectives of Rachel, Cecilia, and Emily, The Quiet Tenant explores the psychological impact of Aidan’s crimes on the women in his life–and the bonds between those women that give them the strength to fight back. Both a searing thriller and an astute study of trauma, survival, and the dynamics of power, The Quiet Tenant is an electrifying debut thriller by a major talent.

Enjoy my reading choices!

Houseplants

The Rise of Houseplants

Click to download this complimentary printable poster!

Have you heard that houseplants are the new pets and pets are the new children? The popularity of houseplants grew substantially during the pandemic when people were isolated and looking to make connections with any living thing. Luckily, unlike some quick unions, embracing these leafy companions came with many benefits.

Here are some of the most significant benefits of having houseplants in your home:

  • Air purification: A study by NASA showed indoor plants improve air quality by removing harmful chemicals from the air.
  • Improved mood: Studies have also shown that house plants can improve your mood and reduce feelings of anxiety, depression, and stress.
  • Increased Productivity: A study by WSU concluded that live indoor plants can help to increase productivity by 12%, making them great additions to home offices and workspaces.
  • Self Care: Some plants, such as Aloe Vera, have healing properties when harnessed correctly. I would strongly advise you to do your research before adding plant remedies to your list of health fixes though. Because on the other hand, some plants can cause you harm.
  • Aesthetics: I feel like this is the most obvious benefit of having house plants in your home. They are a good means of adding natural beauty to your space!

Now, if you’re new to the houseplant scene or have a track record of killing all things green, fear not. There are plenty of low maintenance options available, perfectly suited to your level of expertise. Let’s explore a few.

10 Houseplants That Are Low Maintenance

Spider Plant

Spider Plant Houseplants

Speaking from personal experience I can say, Spider plants are incredibly resilient and can thrive in various lighting conditions, from low to indirect bright light. They should be kept in well-draining soil and watered when the soil feels lightly dry to a finger probe. AND Bonus: they’re non-toxic! Mine has survived being the first plant of an inexperienced tween-aged handler, endured an attack from a poorly aimed dog toy, and a fall from a short height. The only thing it doesn’t tolerate is tap water with high chlorine levels, which causes the tips of its leaves to turn brown. To solve this, simply let your tap water sit for a few days before using it to hydrate your plant.

Snake Plant

Snake Plant Houseplants

I feel like these plants are everywhere, and for good reason too. The Snake Plant is an excellent choice for beginners. It can withstand drought-like conditions and adapt to various lighting situations. Plant it in well-draining soil, such as a cactus mix, and water it when the soil is dry to the touch. This plant is another one that owners find great success propagating. Just be aware this plant is toxic, so keep it away from curious fur babies, babies, and foolish adults.

Holiday Cactus (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter)

Christmas Cactus Houseplants

If you’re seeking vibrant floral colors, the Holiday Cactus is the perfect choice. I currently have a Thanksgiving and a Christmas Cactus in my home. I must admit that I have not perfected the art of getting them to rebloom annually; mine seem to prefer every other year. They are non-toxic though.

Pothos

Pothos Houseplants

Ah, the Pothos plant. These plants are widely available and incredibly easy to care for. I had the pleasure of nursing some Pothos plants in our office back to health that were struggling from the aftermath of the 2020 work from home order. With very little TLC they bounced right back to life before they disappeared under mysterious circumstances a few months ago. But I digress. Pothos thrive in low to bright indirect light and require minimal maintenance. With 15 species to choose from, you can find a leaf pattern and color that perfectly suits your style. You can let them hang loose, or vine. Just be aware that Pothos plants are toxic.

Air Plants

Air plants defy the traditional norms of plant care. Unlike their soil-bound counterparts, air plants require no soil. This unique feature allows for creative displays, such as hanging terrariums or natural wood features. These plants draw moisture from the air, but they still need occasional watering. Mist your air plant weekly and give it a good soak every now and again, adjusting the care based on the humidity levels in your home. If you notice it wilting, it’s a good sign it’s time to dunk it. The best part? Air plants are non-toxic.

Pilea

The Pilea Pepermoides, also known as the Money Plant or UFO Plant, is a standout with its flat pad-like leaves. It thrives in medium to bright indirect light, but direct sunlight can lead to leaf burn. Keep an eye on the leaves, and when they start to droop slightly, it’s time for watering. This plant is non-toxic.

Haworthia

Resembling an Aloe Vera plant, the Haworthia earns its nickname, the Zebra plant, from the striking white stripes that run the length of its spiked leaves. This succulent requires bright indirect sunlight and thrives when you allow the soil to dry before watering. It’s a low maintenance plant that is also non-toxic.

Lucky Bamboo

If you’re looking for an almost indestructible plant, Lucky Bamboo is your best bet. It can grow in water or soil, tolerates low light, and thrives in bright to medium indirect sunlight. With its unique shapes and versatility in pot choices, it is customizable to any space. I was surprised to find out that Lucky Bamboo isn’t bamboo at all; it’s related to the water lily. And unfortunately, it is toxic.

ZZ Plant

The ZZ Plant is a true low-maintenance champion. It can tolerate low light conditions and infrequent watering, making it the perfect fit for forgetful plant parents. Planted in well-draining soil, this resilient plant can survive in several different conditions. I know this because I sometimes forget about the one sitting outside of our office entrance. Just be aware that this plant is toxic. Moreover, it can cause allergic reactions to its handler’s skin, much like poison ivy. So, handle it with caution and care.

Herbs

Finally, let’s not forget about the sustainable option of growing herbs in your home. You’ll not only save on grocery bills but also have fresh ingredients readily available. Many herbs can be grown from scraps and cuttings- from green onions to basil you have a lot of options to choose from. And of course, herbs are non-toxic for human consumption.

Houseplants Are Addicting

My first visit to Seattle Plant Daddy

In conclusion, houseplants offer a plethora of benefits, ranging from air purification and aesthetics to mental well-being and increased productivity. They’re the perfect companions for any home, regardless of your gardening experience. Just remember to do your research, especially if you have pets or young children, as many common houseplants are toxic if ingested.

And one last word of caution before you go. It’s easy to become addicted once you develop a green thumb. Trust me, I’ve been there. One minute I was content with a $4 Lucky Bamboo plant, and next thing I knew, I stood eyeing that beautiful White Princess Philodendron at Seattle Plant Daddy, contemplating if I was experienced enough to handle the splurge. It’s a slippery slope, but a rewarding one.

Happy Planting!

Father’s Day Originated in Spokane Washington

Father’s Day

Hey there curious readers! Did you know that Father’s Day originated in Washington State? Believe it or not, the nation’s very first Father’s Day took place on June 19, 1910, in none other than Spokane Washington.

Now let me share this fascinating tidbit with you.

Sonora Dodd the Mother of Father's Day

Sonora Dodd (click image to learn more about Sonora Smart Dodd)

The brainchild behind this esteemed celebration was Sonora Dodd from Spokane, Washington. Sonora was raised by her widowed father, alongside five siblings. Inspired by the awesomeness of Mother’s Day, she wanted a day to honor her Dad and all the amazing father figures out there. So, she boldly petitioned her fellow Spokanites and presented her grand idea to the local government, who, thankfully agreed that fathers deserved a little spotlight too. Though, it wasn’t until 1972 that Father’s Day earned its official federal recognition. Better late than never, right?

Now, here’s a twist you won’t believe.

Commercialism nearly played a role in removing the holiday altogether. Back in the day, fathers weren’t exactly viewed as the sentimental types who would want a bunch of gifts showered upon them. Can you imagine? Well, neither could the retailers. In fact, there were rallies held to remove Mother’s Day and Father’s Day altogether and instead create one giant Parent’s Day.

But that’s not where this bizarre holiday tale ends.

Just when things were looking bleak, along came the Great Depression, and it changed everything. Retailers across the US doubled down on pushing Father’s Day to the public. Their decision to go all in gave Father’s Day the spotlight it deserved and saved it from extinction.

These days, Father’s Day is all about cherishing the sentimental side of the holiday.

Sure, gifts are great, but spending quality time with your Dad is even better. So, without further ado, here’s a list of five fantastic places where you can bond with your dad this Father’s Day.

  1. Get out there and go hiking! Washington has a ton of awesome places to hike. Here are three kid-friendly hikes to think about embarking on:
  2. Cruise over to a car show. Here are three car show events taking place on June 18th, 2023:
  3. 2023 Trout Derby brought to you by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.
  4. Take Dad out to a Ballgame, or watch the game from home.
  5. Barbeque. When all else fails, food is universally loved and a good old fashioned backyard BBQ is a great setting to spoil Dad!

So, this Father’s Day, let’s go beyond the cliched ties and socks.

(unless that’s what your Dad is into and then by all means-buy the ties and socks) and let’s give our dads the most precious gift of all—our time. Happy Father’s Day to all the amazing dads out there! I hope you enjoy your homegrown holiday Washington Dads!

How to Create the Perfect Outdoor Summer Oasis At Home

Get ready, folks! Summer is just around the corner, and that means it’s time to turn your outdoor space into an inviting outdoor summer oasis.

Whether you have a sprawling backyard or a cozy balcony, the options for creating a tranquil space are endless. Say goodbye to the hustle and bustle of indoor life and join me on a journey through a range of summer home improvement tips that will have you embracing the joys of the season in no time in your outdoor summer oasis!

Let’s start with landscaping and gardening, which I believe are the foundation of any inviting outdoor area.

Choose plants, flowers, and trees that will entice you to step outside and fit your upkeep schedule. Native plants are a fantastic choice because they thrive no matter what Mother Nature throws at them. For that extra touch of beauty, consider incorporating rock formations, water elements, and even plant walls to create focal points and picture-perfect backdrops for your summer adventures.

Now, let’s talk outdoor furniture and accessories, essential elements for crafting a welcoming and functional outdoor summer oasis.

When selecting furniture, remember to prioritize comfort and durability. After all, these pieces will be exposed to the elements, and we all know Washington loves a good rain, as well as scorching heatwaves. Get creative and curate a mood board that captures your aesthetic vision, then scout for affordable options on platforms like Facebook Marketplace and secondhand stores. With thoughtfully chosen furnishings, you can transform your outdoor space into a cozy haven perfect for summer rest and relaxation.

Click Image to Jump to Ikea Runnen Decking

Ah, shade and sun protection, two things we Washingtonians definitely need during those scorching summer heatwaves.

Prepare in advance by installing pergolas, awnings, or shade sails to provide some much needed relief from direct sunlight. And don’t forget about nature’s own sunscreen; trees and shrubbery can offer a natural shield against those harmful UV rays with the added bonus of being beautiful.

Now, lets take a look at outdoor kitchens and dining areas.

I’m personally a huge fan of alfresco dining and entertainment. The trick here is to bring the indoors outdoors. Add simple touches like solar and string lighting to set the mood for your backyard bistro. By creating a well-equipped outdoor dining area, you’ll find yourself spending more time enjoying meals in your outdoor sanctuary.

Picture this: the gentle sound of flowing water, a fountain or pond nestled in your outdoor refuge.

Water features bring a sense of peace and tranquility to any space. I might be biased because I grew up on an island, but there’s something magical about having water in view. Sure, they require upkeep, but have you seen those natural pond installations popping up on TikTok? They blend seamlessly into a native appreciation space, giving local critters a place to thrive too.

Of course, a relaxing retreat should also provide opportunities for outdoor entertainment and recreation.

Consider adding a cozy fire pit or fire table to extend your outdoor time after the sun sets. It’ll not only keep you warm but also serves as a gathering place for lively nighttime conversations. And why stop there? Elevate your space with an outdoor theater or invest in outdoor sporting games and equipment. Make your outdoor oasis a hub of fun and enjoyment that will last you throughout the summer season.

In conclusion, embrace the season and create the perfect outdoor haven that reflects your personal style and offers the ideal backdrop for relaxation, entertainment, and making the most of the beautiful summer months.

Remember, if you keep your space builder grade just for the sake of future upselling, you’re essentially renting it from the next buyer. So let your creativity shine, make your space your own, and enjoy every moment in your outdoor summer oasis!

Molbak’s Garden + Home

Molbaks Garden + Home

Have you ever driven past Molbak’s and wondered what was inside? I had passed the store a handful of times on my way to other places and never thought to stop in and check it out. All that changed once I discovered the hidden oasis that awaits inside its unassuming exterior. Let me tell you, you don’t have to be a plant lover to enjoy Molbak’s because Molbak’s Garden + Home offers more than just plants and it is dog friendly too!

Credit: Google Maps Street View | Click to link to Molbak’s Garden + Home Contact Page

A Sanctuary Full of Treasures

I snapped these photos the last time I visited!

As soon as you step through the main entrance, you’ll be transported into a sanctuary full of treasures. Molbak’s offers an assortment of hard-to-resist wares. Looking to personalize your space? Molbak’s has eco-conscious kitchen goods and home décor items that will make your space feel unique. Need to de-stress? They have wellness products like essential oils and body lotions that will help you relax. Looking for a special gift? They have artisan-crafted jewelry and cozy apparel too. They even have patio furniture!

Molbak’s Garden Café

But that’s not all. Just when you think you’ve seen everything, the indoor section leads you to another hidden treasure. Nestled between the indoor section and the greenhouses is Molbak’s Garden Café. The café is inside a jungle of plants, which almost makes you forget that you’re in the heart of a bustling store. I have not eaten there yet so I will have to save that review for another time. But I did peak my head in to marvel at the floor to ceiling plants. They are stunning.

Click to link to current menu and pricing. Credit: 1st & 3rd image Molbak’s Garden Cafe, 2nd Image I captured last time I visited.

Molbak’s Garden + Home Greenhouses

Beyond the café are the greenhouses, which in my opinion, are the real star of Molbak’s. As soon as you step into the greenhouse section, you’ll feel like you fell down the rabbit hole into a Wonderland of greenery. You’ll be surrounded by rows and rows of plants including tropical varieties, succulents, herbs, and flowers. If you’re a plant lover like me, you’ll be in heaven here. I’ve spent hours wandering through their greenhouses, admiring the vibrant colors and unique textures of each of their hundreds of plants.

The Featured Displays Will Draw You In

The great thing about Molbak’s is that they’re masters at creating impactful feature displays that will draw you in. They have these meticulously curated tables that are so fun to explore. The last time I was there, they had a table of finely crafted DIY terrariums that caught my eye, followed by a vibrant display of carnivorous plants. I particularly enjoyed looking at the various hypnotic but ominous pitcher plant varieties.

Prepare To Experience The Greenhouse Effect During Your Visit

It is easy to lose track of time in the store. So when you visit Molbak’s, you should prepare yourself for a warm stroll because the greenhouses stay warm inside. Even during the winter. On my last visit the cups at the water dispenser had run out so I found myself wishing I had packed a water bottle. Apart from that, I generally enjoy the warmth of the greenhouse air wrapped around me like a warm hug. But learn from my mistake and pack a water bottle!

The Outdoor Section

After making your way through all of the greenhouses, yes I said greenhouses, because there are multiple greenhouse rooms at Molbak’s; you will enter the outdoor section. Here you will find garden tools, plants, pots and more. Since it is Native plant appreciation month, I would be remiss not to point out that they even feature a whole section of Native plant species for sale!

Molbak’s Butterfly Garden at Woodland Park Zoo

But that’s not all! Molbak’s Garden + Home is more than just a store, it’s a community hub. They hold events and classes, so they have spaces reserved for that. They even sponsor Molbak’s Butterfly Garden at Woodland Park Zoo, which focuses on the life cycle and identification of North America’s butterflies and on the preservation and restoration of native plant habitats for these pollinators.

Click to link to Woodland Park Zoo’s Website to find out more information about Molbak’s Butterfly Garden

Molbak’s Garden + Home & The Gardens District

And guess what? Molbak’s has big plans in the works for expansion! They’re breaking ground in 2023 on what will become The Gardens District. As summarized from the information on the project’s home page, The Gardens District will become the new home for Molbak’s Garden + Home and house a hotel, residential living, and native plant gardens, all of which will promote sustainable living.

Click to jump to The Gardens District project page

Come Find Your New Happy Place

As you can see, while Molbak’s may look unassuming from the outside, it’s an oasis for growth, both for the plants and wares it houses inside, as well as the community of Woodinville. But I can sum its existence up into one phrase. I just call it my Happy Place.

4 Benefits to a 1031 Tax Deferred Exchange for your Investment Property

The Power of Strategy with 1031 Exchanges

We recently had the pleasure of hosting a seminar on wealth preservation led by Annamarie Kooning, the NW division manager of 1031-Asset Preservation Inc. The topic was especially relevant in that we have experienced unparalleled real estate appreciation for the last decade, with the drawback being the tax implications when selling a long held real estate asset.

1031 Tax Deferred Exchange Defined

A 1031 tax deferred exchange is a powerful tax strategy that allows real estate investors to defer paying capital gains taxes on the sale of an investment property, provided they meet certain IRS requirements.

Here four benefits of a 1031 exchange:

1. Tax Deferral: The biggest benefit of a 1031 exchange is the tax deferral. By exchanging a property instead of selling it, an investor can defer paying capital gains taxes on the sale, potentially indefinitely. This allows the investor to keep more of their proceeds working for them, and to defer paying taxes until a later date.

2. Increased Buying Power: Another advantage of a 1031 exchange is that it allows investors to use the equity in their property to purchase a more valuable property, without having to pay taxes on the sale of the first property. This can increase the investor’s buying power and enable them to purchase a property that may generate more income or appreciate more quickly.

3. Diversification: A 1031 exchange also allows investors to diversify their real estate holdings. By exchanging one property for another, an investor can adjust their portfolio to better meet their investment goals, such as increasing cash flow, reducing risk, or capitalizing on emerging trends.

4. Estate Planning: Finally, a 1031 exchange can also be a useful tool for estate planning. By deferring taxes on a property, an investor can pass it on to their heirs without having to pay capital gains taxes. This can help to preserve the investor’s wealth for future generations.

Native Plant Appreciation Month

April is Native Plant Appreciation Month in Washington State!

April is an exciting month for plant lovers in Washington State as it is Native Plant Appreciation Month. Governor Inslee officially declared this month-long celebration on February 1st, 2023, to raise awareness of the importance of native plants in supporting healthy ecosystems in the state.

What are Native Plants?

So, what exactly are native plants? These are plants that grow naturally in an area without any human intervention. Due to its distinct landscape regions, Washington State is home to a diverse range of over 2,300 native plant species, from mossy forest halls to colorful wildflowers. If you would like to learn about them all, check out this plant directory by WNPS!

Why are Native Plants Important?

Native plants are crucial in supporting biodiversity and wildlife habitats as they have adapted to their local environment. They also require less maintenance and resources compared to non-native plants, making them a more sustainable option for landscaping and gardening.

Why Should You Consider Adding Native Plants to Your Garden?

Let me tell you about the benefits of adding native plants to your garden. First, native species can help attract natural pollinators. They also provide shelter and nourishment for indigenous creatures. Additionally, these plants require less maintenance; which means you will reduce the need for fertilizers and pesticides. Moreover, they need less water and can sustain off of what the environment provides. Overall, they are a sustainable and eco-friendly choice for any garden. So, it’s a win-win for you and Washington!

Where Can You Buy Native Plants?

Luckily, there are a few events happening statewide where you will be able to purchase native plants. Below you will find links to a few resources with information on where to buy native plants.

Companion Planting

Companion Planting

Did you know that your garden plants can benefit from having a friend planted beside them? Companion planting is a great way to improve the health and yield of your garden. By planting certain crops together, you can create a mutually beneficial environment that promotes growth and deters pests. Moreover, creating biodiversity in your garden can have a visually pleasing affect for you to enjoy. Here are some tips for companion planting:

  1. Do you research and grow complementary plants beside one another. Some plants have properties that will naturally repel pests and others will attract them. Use this knowledge to your advantage and try pairing the two together to repel any unwanted visitors.
  2. Choose your plant friends wisely. Boundaries and needs matter, even in the plant world. You should take into consideration the ground coverage, spacing, sunlight and watering requirements of your plant before giving it a buddy. You want to make sure that both plants receive the right amount of sunlight, water, air circulation, spacing and nutrients that they need to grow big and strong.
  3. Companion planting is an art, not an exact science. Don’t be afraid to mix things up and see what works best in your garden. Keep track of what works well and change what doesn’t. Over time you will refine a planting strategy that gives you a beautiful, diverse, and enriched garden.

Putting Companion Planting to the Test

Using the companion planting technique, let’s examine the benefits of planting marigolds in your garden. Marigolds have gained a reputation for being great companion plants because they have many benefits for plants growing near them. Equally as important, they remain neutral toward plants who do not receive benefits from growing near them.

Here are some things to consider before adding Marigolds to your garden:

  • Marigolds are a highly fragrant flower and because of that they are known to deter garden destroying pests such as mosquitoes, who nibble on you, and nematodes, who cause root rot.
  • There are good bugs in gardens too. Marigolds attract beneficial bugs like pollinators, who will help make your garden grow, and ladybugs, who kill aphids.
  • Marigolds grow in a variety of sizes and their size should be considered when selecting a perfect pairing.
    • French Marigolds for example grow great near tomato plants. They are a shorter variety and are not overpowered by tall tomato vines. They bloom in spring and can last until the ground frosts, and they hold up well in the rainy PNW environment.
    • African Marigolds grow much taller and have blooms measuring up to 4 inches in size, which could put new growth around them in constant shadow. But they are visually impactful and would be a great addition to a garden backdrop or as ground cover for tall plants like sunflowers.

Marigolds are a great option when companion planting:

These are just a few plants that will benefit from having Marigolds as companion plants.

Bonus Tip: Use Native Plants

Adding native plants to your companion planting choices is a great idea. These plants are naturally strong and adapted to their environment. This means they can grow well without much attention from you! Additionally, they need less water and fertilizer compared to non-native varieties. Native plants also attract local animals that can help take care of your garden, like natural pollinators. If you want to learn more about using native plants for companion planting, I suggest you check out this study by David James of WSU.

Symbiotic Relationships Will Strengthen Your Garden Growth!

Remember, companion planting is all about finding the right balance that will benefit the plants you plot next to each other. There are countless combinations of plants that can be successfully grown together, making companion planting a fun and creative way to optimize your garden. Give it a try and see the difference companion plants make in your garden!
