Skagit Valley Tulip Guide

Skagit Valley Tulip Guide
The Skagit Valley Tulips have become the undisputed royalty of blooms in Washington State! It’s no wonder, given their renown – in 2016, National Geographic voted them as the number one feature in their “Best Spring Trips” and in 2019, Celia Fernandez of Oprah Magazine named them number four in her “10 Best Flower Festivals in the U.S.” list. These honors have certainly helped to cement the tulips’ reputation, but they were already drawing crowds of thousands of visitors worldwide before making these lists, and continue to do so to this day. If you’re looking for a spectacular show of blooms, there’s nothing quite like the Skagit Valley Tulips! To help make your visit to Skagit Valley a memorable one, here is a detailed Skagit Valley Tulip Guide.
What Makes The Tulips So Popular?
Just imagine a landscape quilted with rows and rows of vibrant patterns of hand tailored tulips with a picturesque snowcapped mountain range in the backdrop. It seems like something from a dream. But the reality is, every spring, acres and acres of land in Skagit Valley are blanketed with vibrant, multi-colored tulip blooms. Moreover, visitors can enjoy walking around the fields, exploring various farms, and taking pictures of the stunning views.
When is The Best Time to See the Skagit Valley Tulips?
This question is a little harder to answer. The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival runs from April 1st to April 30th each year. However, weather and field conditions will cause the tulip bloom times to fluctuate from the last week of March through the second week of April. You can verify bloom locations by viewing this Bloom Map:
Where To See the Skagit Valley Tulips?
The tulip fields are open to the public, but they are located on private land. Because of crop rotation, the tulip fields are different each year. RoozenGaarde, Tulip Town, Tulip Valley Farms, and Garden Rosalyn all have tulip displays for visitors to view and photograph. Every bulb grower has their own admission fee and set of rules to follow so make sure you head to their websites to see what the 2024 year expectations are.
Where to Stay Overnight?
The official Skagit Valley Tulip Festival website has compiled a thorough list of accommodations. In my opinion, if you are willing to travel a little, I would recommend looking at lodging in La Conner or Anacortes for something more affordable and less crowded during the tulip bloom season.
Pro Tips For Skagit Valley Tulip Tiptoeing
Layering up and making sure you have a change of clothes and shoes is essential for a successful and enjoyable tulip visit. The weather in Skagit Valley can be unpredictable, and the tulip fields can be muddy, so making sure you’re prepared is key. It’s also important to remember to not walk through the tulips as this can damage the flowers. Instead, find the perfect angle to capture your photo so that it looks like you are in the middle of the field. Lastly, bring snacks and water for the car ride! The lines to park can be a LONG wait. With these tips in mind, you’re sure to have a great tulip-tiptoeing experience.
Want More Skagit Valley Tulip Festivities?
This year’s event promises to be bigger and better than ever with over 140+ vendors, entertainers, food trucks, and children’s activities. Be sure to grab some delicious food while you’re down there and don’t forget to stop by the local shops and the Riverwalk!
A few stores I would recommend you check out are Jeka’s Plants, Forte Chocolates, and the Skagit Valley Food Co-Op.
You Will Be Happy You Went!
Skagit Valley is truly a breathtaking sight to behold each spring! The sight of acres of hand tailored flowers in vibrant and vivid colors is an image that will stay with you for a lifetime. Not only are the views stunning, but you can also explore the many nearby farms and take pictures of the incredible scenery. There is no better way to welcome in the spring season than with a visit to Skagit Valley!

Washington State Daffodil Guide

A Washington State Daffodil Guide
Washington State has a reputation for wielding moody gray skies. Given that, you may find it odd to learn that Washington is the largest supplier of daffodil bulbs and daffodil flowers in the United States. Such a sunny dispositioned flower may seem out of place here, but they thrive in Washington. Below you will find a Washington State Daffodil Guide discussing where to see them and how to grow them.
When Daffodils Begin To Bloom
Daffodils typically bloom from late winter to early spring and can last for a few weeks. If you are looking to see daffodils this bloom season, you are in luck! There are plenty of great places to find them. One of the best spots is in Skagit Valley.
Daffodils in Skagit Valley
Although Skagit Valley is known for their Tulips, they also grow around 1,000 acres of daffodil fields. These bright fields start shining while the weather is still cool in the early spring. The fields are private, which most likely explains why the daffodils don’t attract the same crowds the Tulips do.
While you can’t traipse through the fields, you can view the daffodils from the roadside. Conveniently, RoozenGaarde has an interactive bloom map you can view to see where the flowers have blossomed before embarking on your road trip.
La Conner Daffodil Festival
If you are looking for a more immersive way to see daffodils head over to the La Conner. The city holds an annual Daffodil Festival which includes a Daffodil Parade, a Daffodil Pet Parade, a Daffodil Photo Contest, and other daffodil themed delights. Check out their event page for more details.
91st Annual Daffodil Festival Grand Floral Parade
Another interactive daffodil experience can be found at the 91st Annual Daffodil Festival. This unique event is hosted by four cities. On April 6th, 2024 the parades will begin as follows: Tacoma 10:15 | Puyallup 12:45 | Sumner 2:30 | Orting 5:00. For more information visit the event page.
Grow Your Own Daffodils
Of course, there is another way to enjoy daffodils, grow your own! Planting daffodils is a great way to add a vibrant splash of color to your garden! The best time to plant daffodils is in the fall, a few weeks before the first frost, when ground temperatures are around 60-65 degrees. You’ll want to find a spot that gets plenty of sun. When planting, dig a hole a few inches wider and deeper than the bulb, with the pointed end facing up. In the right conditions a daffodil will rebloom annually. If you are looking for larger blooms, you may want to divide and replant your daffodils every three to four years, as this helps to increase the number of blooms each year. If you have a variety that is not a common one, I would recommend consulting with a local nursery or gardening expert for advice on how often to divide and replant them.
Daffodils Are The First Sign of Spring!
Daffodils are a beautiful signifier that spring is nearing. I grew up driving through the Skagit Valley area and I promise their sunlit hued faces are worth seeing, even from a respectful distance! If you are lucky, you may get to see Snow Geese taking flight over the flower fields during your visit! Have fun adding daffodils to your spring garden and activities!

Kerloo Cellars

Mill Creek Wine Walk Stop 11
Our 11th stop of the tasting took us to Lilac and Lemon to use our bonus token on a wine tasting with Kerloo Cellars. If you have stuck with us throughout our series, you will know that this was our final tasting of the event. Our rushed efforts were rewarded when we crossed the proverbial finish line through the front swinging door of Lilac and Lemon. We continued into the boutique with our prize filled wine glasses in hand and browsed their wares.
A Brief History of Kerloo Cellars
Ryan Crane, head winemaker and owner, founded Kerloo Cellars in 2007 here in Washington state. He began his journey as a volunteer and furthered his skillset by working at Forgeron Cellars, which is a winery I have previously blogged about. Eventually, he established Kerloo Cellars. He and his team are currently in the process of revamping his business locations. If you would like to try out Kerloo Cellars wines you should head to their Woodinville tasting room.
Kerriann’s tasting notes on the Kerloo Cellars 2019 Columbia Valley Cabernet:
I thought this wine was aromatic with notes of dark red berries and spice. This wine tasted supple and full bodied with short notes of raspberries deepened by ripened cherries and grapes. The red fruit tastes and herbal spices were present, but all restrained by tannins that went on and on. Overall, I found this to be a smooth, sophisticated, and delicious cabernet.
Chasity’s tasting notes on the 2019 Majestic GSM Blend:
Ok last stop on the wine walk, yay!!!! We ran into one of our peers we work with Kelly Clark with First American Title and had a little too much fun. I tried the Majestic GSM Blend, with my first sip was like a cherry tart explosion on my palate. It quickly changed into a smooth bright mouthful with hints of cinnamon, which I really enjoyed. It ended with a nice tannin finish that left me wanting more and overall I enjoyed this tasting.
We Did It!
It was such tough work but somehow, we managed to use up all our tickets and tokens and had a great time at the Mill Creek Town Center Wine Walk. I will give a shout out to the wineries we missed: Rider Cellars and RR Poet, maybe there will be a next time for us; and close by saying if you haven’t had the opportunity to check out one of these events, you should! They are a lot of fun.

Wandering Wolf Cellars

Mill Creek Wine Walk Stop #10
Our 10th stop of the evening took us to People’s Bank where we tried wines by Wandering Wolf Cellars. I will preface this review by stating that we were in a rush to complete our tastings before the evening ended. As a result, the tasting was brief. We didn’t sit with the wine as we had done with the previous nine reviews.
Wandering Wolf Cellars hosted by Peoples Bank
Despite our rushed efforts to use up our tokens this was the wine that I was most excited to try. Admittedly, because I am a sucker for a good name, a great wine label and wolves. Luckily, even in my brevity I enjoyed the wine I tried at this rolling stop.
Brief Background on Wandering Wolf Cellars
If you are a fan of a great backstory through creative writing I strongly encourage you to check out the Wandering Wolf Cellars “Our Story” page written by owner and winemaker Alex Wolf. To summarize, the story Wandering Wolf Cellars is a tale of traveling there and back again. Wolf embarked on a backpacking trip through Western Europe, learning he had a love for wine. After returning home to the PNW he completed a winemaking program and interned at several wineries. Eventually, he opened Wandering Wolf Cellars based out of Shoreline featuring grapes sourced from Columbia Valley and Yakima Valley.
Kerriann’s Tasting Notes on the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon
I didn’t make note of the smell or coloring on this one. But I did venture to say that this was a smooth, savory, easy to drink cab. It was full, deep and herbal. I also noted that it was delicious, and I wished that I had more time to sit and enjoy it properly, but the rush was on.
Chasity’s Tasting Notes on the 2019 Viognier
This stop was near the last tasting and decided on the 2019 Viognier. I have to say Viognier is not usually my favorite but I decided to give it a try. My first taste was a little bitter. It also provided a full body taste kind of a little heavy in the mouth, almost oily. I would say it’s very fruit forward but dry at the same time. Defiantly held up in the juiciness department as the tasting went on. This one was not my favorite but I have tried others from Wandering Wolf Cellars and have enjoyed them.
One More Stop To Go
If you’ve been following along, we only have one last wine tasting left to post! Keep checking in because I will be updating the links below when we post the final tasting.

Color the Year Viva Magenta

2023 Pantone Color of the Year Viva Magenta
I remember seeing articles in 2022 about how the world was slowly losing color. When I stopped and thought about it, I realized there was some truth to that. Even I find myself drawn to neutral tones lately. While corporate machines and influencers have muted the world monochromatic, Pantone decided to burst into 2023 with a loud bang! They announced that their Pantone Color of 2023 is Viva Magenta.
What is Viva Magenta?
According to the PANTONE website:
How to encorporate Viva Magenta in 2023
While Viva Magenta can be an intimidating color, there are a lot of fun and temporary ways to add the color into your space in 2023. Whether you choose to bring it into your home or wear it, I believe you will be able to make this color as subtle or as loud as you would like it to be.
Pick a Color Palette with Viva Magenta
A great way to incorporate this trend into your home is to pick a picture with a pop of magenta and build your color story from it. A great color combination to start out with is Windermere blue and Viva Magenta. However, if you were looking for a different color palette I recommend using Photoshop or Canva to build your palette. If you have access to photoshop, simply upload the photo and drag the eyedropper tool across the photo to find your desired color story. If you do not have access to photoshop, programs like Canva (which has a free access version) also will pick out colors from a photo automatically. Have fun playing with colorful combinations!
Go Bold with A Statement Wall
Another easy way to make a big statement in your home is to paint a focal wall with a hue of Viva Magenta.
Purchase Accent Items
I wouldn’t say that Viva Magenta is a color that easily translates into most people’s spaces. However, if you want to try out the trend you could easily pick out a few accent items like pillows, artwork, and dinnerware, that would be easy to change out.
Wear It!
If adding Viva Magenta into your home is too bold for you another way to try the trend out is to add it into your wardrobe. I personally would go this route, with a nice magenta lipstick or nail polish. But magenta would also look great on a tie! Even exchanging “I do’s” would be a fun time to feature the color.
Will You Ring in Your New Year with Bold Colors?
Admittedly, I am not the biggest fan of pink tones. Ever since I came home from university to find that my sister had painted our room, HER room, essentially a shade of Viva Magenta, it has not been a color I gravitate toward. But I could see a time and place to try this trend out coming up in my near future. Will you be bold enough to give it a try?

We Are The Light, by Quick, Matthew
From Matthew Quick, the New York Times bestselling author of The Silver Linings Playbook –made into the Academy Award-winning movie starring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper–comes a poignant and hopeful novel about a widower who takes in a grieving teenager and inspires a magical revival in their small town.

Insisting that his deceased wife, Darcy, visits him every night in the form of an angel, Lucas spends his time writing letters to his former Jungian analyst, Karl. It is only when Eli, an eighteen-year-old young man whom the community has ostracized, begins camping out in Lucas’s backyard that an unlikely alliance takes shape and the two embark on a journey to heal their neighbors and, most importantly, themselves.

Naches Heights Vineyard Wine Tasting

Mill Creek Wine Walk Stop #9
Our ninth stop of the evening led us to Expedia CruiseShipCenters to taste wine by Naches Heights Vineyard. I remembered having their Crooked Red Blend at a prior wine walk and I enjoyed that. So naturally, I was looking forward to branching out and trying another wine by them.
Naches Heights Vineyard hosted by Expedia CruiseShipCenters
I was equally as excited to try another wine as I was excited to visit Expedia CruiseShipCenters. At a previous tasting event they had live music, food, and drinks. This time they extended the same hospitality. It was a nice spot to linger and grab a small bite to eat while watching their live performance with Aidan Rufer. Check him out, he is a Singer/Songwriter and guitarist from Seattle WA currently studying at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Now that I’ve made note of the top-notch hospitality, let’s get into the wine!
Brief Background on Naches Heights Vineyard
Again, this was another Winery that I have previously written on so I will insert a brief history from that blog here:
Kerriann’s Tasting Notes on the 2019 Two Dancers (Syrah Blend):
I remember this wine being a bolder red blend. It smelled of red fruits and had an earthy component to it. It tasted of full-flavored fruit profiles, like blackberry and cherry. It was dry and yet acidic. While I found this wine to be fruit presenting, there were also undercurrents of spices present. Overall, it was a good wine.
Chasity’s Tasting Notes on 2019 Can Can (White Blend):
The 2019 Can Can is a blend of Riesling, Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Marsanne, and Gewurztraminer. I really enjoyed the smell of this white wine blend, it was sweet and crisp in smell. I was super excited to taste it! My first taste was dry which I didn’t mind because it quickly turned as I was able to grab hints of pear, green apple, then later discovered apricot and peach. A surprising twist at the end as it had a slightly spicy bite mid-way but finishing with a citrus melon taste. It was yummy to the palate and I really enjoyed this one and would try it again!
Two More Stops To Go

Dahlman Cellars

Mill Creek Town Center wine walk stop #8
We traveled to familiar territory for stop number eight on our creative team’s wine walk. Our very own Windermere Mill Creek Town Center office was hosting Dahlman Cellars. I was excited to try their wine because I had missed out on tasting them at the last wine walk.
Brief Background on Dahlman Cellars
Since I have already written a brief background on Dahlman Cellars in a prior blog post, I will insert the excerpt from that here:
Dahlman Cellars hosted by Windermere Mill Creek
At this point in the evening, I was ready to go back to familiar tastes. I chatted with our agent on duty and then I headed toward the wine table. I ended up choosing the 2020 The Actuary Cab Sauv Blend, which I was told had won double gold and gold awards.
Kerriann’s tasting notes on the 2020 The Actuary Cab Sauv Blend
The first thing I noted about this wine was that it smelled delicious, like a mix of cocoa, coffee, and vanilla. Which may sound overwhelming but smelled very even on the nose. As far as taste is concerned, this wine managed to be bold and even. The flavors of dark fruit, cocoa and coffee presented themselves very velvety on the tongue. I tend to really enjoy red blends and this one was great!
Chasity’s tasting notes on the 2020 The Actuary Cab Sauv Blend
This red blend was very pleasing to the pallet as the first taste was sweet but quickly offered subtle hints of a dark chocolate. You can also taste hints of fruit like blackberry and cherry which I really enjoyed. The smell presented a deep dark sweet smell with vanilla. It went down very smoothly. I enjoy red blends and this one was really good.
Three More to Go!
This was only stop eight of our wine-walk and there are still three more to go. I’ll be updating the links below as we post our tastings so stay tuned for the next one!

10 Christmas Décor Boards

It’s Christmas Time!
Alright, enough time has passed from Thanksgiving that I feel comfortable announcing- IT’S CHRISTMAS TIME! Whether you have been naughty or nice, the holiday season is upon us! Since Christmas decorations started twinkling their way into shopping aisles long before Halloween even began, I have had plenty of time to look at more Christmas items than any one person should. For this reason, I have compiled 10 Christmas décor boards and where to find the items from them.
Homemade Christmas
I figured I would start with this board since as the Grinch said, ” Maybe Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. Maybe Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.” Christmas decorations only have to be as costly as you are willing to spend. Some of the most treasured ornaments from my childhood were cut up, glue and glitter spackled toilet paper rolls that my siblings and I had made during my mom’s infamous 24 nights of Christmas crafting events. With this notion in mind, check out some ideas for homemade Christmas decorations. I will include the links to the creators and their tutorials below as well.

A Very Merry Grinchmas
Speaking of the Grinch, as usual he is having his holiday moment at this time of year. He has slink, slank, slunked his way into stores everywhere and is ready to occupy the holiday spotlight in your home. Below you will find a few Grinchy items I adore. I will also link where you can buy them.

Disney Christmas
While I’ve got beloved Characters on my mind, I’ll go ahead and post up this next board. Just like the Grinch, Disney characters are dazzling their way into Christmas displays this year. While Hobby Lobby owned the last board, Costco finds will dominate this one. As the trend continues, below you will find the Disney Christmas board and where to find the items.

Rankin Bass Christmas
I am probably unnecessarily aging myself with my Christmas fandoms of choice. But, here we go with another Christmas Classic favorite, a Rankin Bass Christmas. If you have no idea what I am talking about hopefully this imagery will spark your memory. I used to play these movies so often that my Mom hid the VHS tape from me after a solid year of me playing Christmas movies non-stop.

- The Year Without a Santa Claus Heat Miser Vinyl Soda Figure by Funko Pop – Amazon

Nutcracker Ballet Christmas
Fun fact, or at least fun for me. I was once a Snowflake in a production of the Nutcracker Ballet. I have always been enchanted by the way different ballet productions choose to marry their body movements to music. The set production always takes everything up a notch too. For me it’s not Christmas time until I’ve played the Grand pas de deux (Nutcracker) in every rendition I can find. Of course this theme can be approached from many different ways; but I chose to find generalized Nutcracker themed items.
- Hollywoood Nutcrackers Suite Nutcracker, 18 Inch, Multicolored by Kurt Adler – Amazon

Gingerbread Christmas
I feel like Gingerbread is having it’s moment this Christmas. Everywhere I look there seems to be some sort of delectable looking decoration baked and frosted gingerbread style. Whether you are a fan of neutrals or color, gingerbread can easily make it’s way into your Christmas display this year. If you can’t find one you like, you can always just purchase a gingerbread kit and do it yourself!
- Gingerbread Garland – Hobby Lobby

A Touch of Evergreen Christmas
The world seems increasingly to be less colorful these days. Neutral has become the preference. Still, I think there are ways to go a classier route and still have a little pop of color. A neutral trend that I am currently liking for Christmas is neutral tones with a pop of evergreen greenery.
- 9″ Flocked Sitting Deer Decorative Figurine Green – Wondershop™ – Target
- LED Ceramic Christmas Trees, Set of 5 – Crate & Barrel
- 12″ Zinc Christmas Nutcracker – Crate & Barrel
- Faux Potted Hemlock Small Pre-Lit LED Christmas Tree with White Lights 4′ – Crate & Barrel

- Small Wooden Snowman Holiday Decoration – Crate & Barrel
- 12.5″ Flocked Standing Deer Decorative Figurine Green – Wondershop™ – Target
Rustic Glam Christmas
Again, this Christmas décor board will lean into that neutral tone aesthetic I have been seeing all over. The thing that really sets this board apart is the textures of fur, snow, wood, metal and glass. If I didn’t love everything Christmas and if I didn’t have a decade worth of random things I’ve purchased over the years, I would lean into this Christmas style.
- ARCTIC HOLIDAY 24in Wood Tree Collar With Metal Accents – HomeGoods
- MADE IN INDIA 19in Antique Tree – Marshalls
- MADE IN INDIA Light Burnt Wooden Decor Snowflake – Marshalls
- 5′ Pre-Lit LED Downswept Flocked Alpine Balsam Artificial Christmas Tree Dewdrop Warm White Lights – Wondershop™ – Target
